DreamKids® Learning Lab Year 3 | Growing Up: Meeting the Challenges of Childhood and Adolescence

Where does imagination take us as children begin to meet a more complex world?

Over the past two years, DreamKids® has explored how Saphire® Imagery can meet children in the language they already speak so naturally: imagination and play.

We began with fear and anger. We moved into stress, sleep, confidence, family, comparison, friendship, belonging and identity.

Now, in Year 3, we turn toward some of the more complex experiences children encounter as they grow: shame and perfectionism, attention and neurodiversity, motivation and executive functioning, body image and adolescence, technology and screens, values and choices, grief, forgiveness and finding what matters.

As always, this is a Learning Lab. We will imagine, create and experiment together, developing new exercises while also taking the imagery out into children’s lives, discovering what happens, and bringing what we learn back to the group.

DreamKids® Year 3 is for those who want to go deeper into the practice: working, playing and imagining with children, and learning from what they show us.

The next chapter of DreamKids®

Unusual times call for us to reach within for guidance, as we have the ability to be our own guiding stars.  When children can cultivate this innate ability of creativity to access their inner knowledge, it empowers them to be resilient and confident, two qualities they need in this world of new and special challenges, marked by the social isolation and learning loss born from COVID; overuse of technology and reliance on social media; and/or increased uncertainties about the future voiced by adults at home or in the media.

Childhood does not become simpler as children grow. The inner and outer worlds become more complex. Children become increasingly aware of how others see them. They compare themselves. They make mistakes and judge themselves for them. They struggle with attention, motivation, expectations and pressure. Their bodies change. Friendships change. Technology occupies more of their world. They begin to question who they are, what they believe and where they belong.

And they encounter experiences that cannot simply be fixed: disappointment, regret, loss and grief.

What can imagination offer them here?

DreamKids® Year 3 will explore how Saphire® Imagery can meet children and adolescents within these more complex experiences, not by supplying the right answer, but by giving them a space in which to see, experiment, discover and find their own resources.

In Year 3, we expect to explore areas such as:

  • Shame, guilt, perfectionism and the fear of getting it wrong
  • Attention, executive functioning, motivation and neurodiversity
  • Grief, loss, regret and forgiveness
  • Waiting, choices, values and developing responsibility
  • Body image, puberty and the changing experience of self
  • Technology, screens and the pull of instant gratification
  • Meaning, purpose and the question: What matters to me?

As in previous Learning Labs, the exact journey will evolve through the work itself.

From Creating to Practising

DreamKids® has always been experimental. Together we have created, experienced, questioned and refined imagery exercises specifically for children.

In Year 3, we want to take this exploration further.

Participants will be encouraged not only to experience and help create imagery exercises in class, but also to bring the work into their real encounters with children — at home, in schools, in counseling or therapeutic settings and return with what they discover.

What happened when you offered the image?

What did the child do that you hadn’t expected?

Where did an exercise open something?

Where did it need to change?

And what can the child’s response teach us about the next exercise we create?

In this way, practice becomes part of the creative process. The children themselves continue to help us discover what DreamKids® can become.

Year 3 will continue to be playful, experiential and collaborative. We will imagine together, develop new exercises and deepen our understanding of how to follow the image rather than impose an answer.

For what may be the final year of the DreamKids® Learning Lab, we invite you to join us in taking the work one step further: from imagining, to experimenting, to bringing the images into children’s lives, and learning from what comes back.
